Challenges and opportunities for climate adaptation in Finnish urban environments

The aim of the project is to identify the most important climate‑adaptation needs in Finnish urban environments over the coming decades, compile existing measures, assess their effectiveness, and examine business opportunities linked to climate adaptation.

Climate change increases heatwaves, heavy rainfall and other extreme weather events that place pressure on Finnish cities. Urbanisation raises risks for both people and infrastructure. National and EU adaptation guidelines highlight the need to strengthen societal resilience, implement adaptation measures systematically, and utilise nature‑based solutions. Well‑planned adaptation measures can safeguard health, wellbeing, infrastructure functionality and biodiversity.

The project assesses adaptation needs using climate models and compiles research data on risks in urban environments as well as existing adaptation practices. It also provides an overview of Finland’s readiness for adaptation measures and related business opportunities, based on earlier research and stakeholder engagement. The project will produce recommendations that support societal resilience and help safeguard wellbeing in a changing climate. The results will provide knowledge support especially for the development of Finland’s national climate‑adaptation plan (KISS2030).
